Chelsea Storm To 13th Straight Victory

A Willian brace helped Chelsea beat Stoke City to claim their 13th consecutive Premier League win and equal Arsenal’s record for the most successive victories within the same season.

Gary Cahill opened the scoring from Cesc Fabregas’ 100th Premier League assist – only the fourth player to reach the milestone – before Stoke equalised via Bruno Martins Indi’s first PL goal 56 seconds into the second half.

The Blues made it 2-1 when Willian fired through the crowd after Eden Hazard’s cushioned pass, but Stoke levelled for the second time through Peter Crouch.

Chelsea hit back immediately to take the lead for the third time as Willian rifled into the roof of Lee Grant’s net, while Diego Costa completed the scoring on his return from suspension with his 14th of the season.

Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba scored two late goals as Manchester United deservedly beat Middleborough.

Hal Robson-Kanu scored a stunning winner on his first Premier League start in over three years as West Brom came from behind to beat Southampton.

Managerless Swansea City remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after they were thoroughly outplayed by Bournemouth.

Leicester City beat West Ham United 1-0.

Happy new year.

Swansea City Fire Manager Bob Bradley

English club, Swansea City say they have parted company with manager Bob Bradley.

Confirming Bradley’s sack on Tuesday night, the club said on its website that departure comes after the disappointing 4-1 Boxing Day defeat to West Ham at the Liberty Stadium.

“We are sorry to lose Bob after such a short period of time. Unfortunately things haven’t worked out as planned and we felt we had to make the change with half the Premier League season remaining.

“With the club going through such a tough time, we have to try and find the answers to get ourselves out of trouble. Personally, I have nothing but praise for Bob. He is a good man; a good person who gave everything to the job. His work-rate is phenomenal and we wish him well for the future,” Swans chairman Huw Jenkins confirmed.

Bradley had 11 games at the helm after replacing Francesco Guidolin on October 3.

But with the Swans currently in the relegation zone with 12 points, the club felt it needed a change after Bradley picked up just two wins and two draws during his stint in charge, with 29 goals conceded along the way

Buhari Asks States ToBuhari Asks States To Pay Workers From Debt-Service Refunds

President Muhammadu Buhari has requested state governors to pay at least 25% of the refunds made to them from excess deductions for external debt service, to be used to settle outstanding workers’ entitlements.

The President made the call as he approved the sum of 552.74 billion naira to be paid in batches to all the states that are owed.

However, the states are expected to receive 25% of their approved sums in the first instance before the week runs out. There are about 33 states in the bracket.

A statement by his spokesman, Mr Garba Shehu, revealed that the refunds arose following the claims by the states that they had been overcharged in deductions for external debt service between 1995 and 2002.

In a directive through the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, President Buhari said that the issue of workers’ benefits, particularly salary and pensions must not be allowed to continue as a national problem and should be tackled with all the urgency that can be summoned.

When he assumed office in 2015, the President declared an emergency over unpaid salaries after he discovered that 27 out of Nigeria’s 36 states had fallen behind in payments to their workers, in some cases for up to a year.

Following this, a bailout loan was issued to the states twice with a first batch of about 300 billion naira given to them in 2015 in the form of soft loans.

The administration also got the Debt Management Office (DMO) to restructure their commercial loans of over 660 billion naira and extend the life span of the loans.

Because this did not succeed in pulling many of the states out of distress, the Federal Government consequently gave out an additional 90 billion naira to 22 states in 2016, as yet another bailout loans under very stringent conditions.

“We are keen to get more English coaches either working with our national teams or back into the Premier League or Football League as coaches and managers.

“I have been in regular contact with several current and ex-England internationals about a pilot programme.”

Individuals are assessed and then the FA puts together a learning programme.

Navy Offers Free Medical Services To Rural Communities In Bayelsa

Nigerian Navy has extended its monthly medical outreach to rural coastal communities in Bayelsa State, as part of its effort to promote a cordial relationship with the communities where it operates.

The medical team at the Central Naval Command (CNC), which comprises of doctors, pharmacists, ophthalmologists and other medical professionals, offered full day free services at Otua community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, south-south Nigeria.

Flagging off the event, the Flag Officer Commanding CNC, Rear Admiral Mohammed Garba, noted that the free medical mission would henceforth, focus on rural communities who lack access to basic health services in Bayelsa State.

“The navy remains committed to building a cordial relationship with you our host community. We will do this by what you are seeing now.

“We are here to provide free medical and humanitarian services to the people of this community,” he said.

Rear Admiral Garba also urged the people to support the Navy in its effort to stamp out oil theft and prevent sabotage on oil installations within their communities.

On his part, an indigene of Otua community and a retired Rear Admiral, Thomas Lokoson, urged the people to desist from oil theft and pipeline vandalism, saying it results to self-inflicted adverse consequences that could be prevented.

He noted that oil leaks and spills resulting from pipeline breach by vandals pollute waterways and farmlands as well as threaten the livelihood of residents in the community.

The retired naval officer regretted that the funds that would have been channeled to development were used for clean-up exercises to solve environmental problems that were avoidable.

The traditional ruler of Otua community, Edward Tokpo, who also benefitted from the free medical mission, applauded the Nigerian Navy for the gesture.

“This is the first in my over 40 years reign as the paramount ruler of this community that we are experiencing this kindness. Thank you Navy, you have indeed done well,” he said.

Mr Tokpo further pledged the cooperation and support of the community to the Nigerian Navy in its effort to secure oil facilities and the coastal communities

Nigerian Airforce Acquires New Aircraft From Pakistan

The Nigerian Airforce (NAF), has increased the number of aircrafts in its fleet with the procurement of four Super Mushak Trainer Aircraft from Pakistan, for the training of student pilots.

It was designed to provide primary flight training to the pilots of the PAF Academy and also could be used for both military and civilian missions.

The symbolic commissioning of the aircraft at the 301 Flying Training School in Kaduna marks the official takeover of the new platforms by the Nigerian Airforce

Abubakar, further stated that it will also help in fighting insurgency in the country, which is part of the reason why it was bought.

How Psquare’s Split Inspired Darey’s ‘Pray For Me’

Singer, Darey Art Alade, reveals that his classic ‘Pray For Me’, featuring Soweto Gospel Choir, was inspired by the relationship breakdown of pop duo, P-square.

He explained that although it was inspired by them, it went beyond their story.

The song according to him, centers on independence, ones sojourn in life, trying to find your way and the efforts of ‘Nigerian’ parents especially, in trying to put their children on the right path.

It follows the brave sojourn of the coming of age of an African young man and his quest to find his path to success.

Darey also praised the Soweto Gospel Choir who he said featured on a couple of other songs off his 2015 ‘Naked’ album.

Working with them, according to him was as a result of similarities he discovered between himself and the choir, more so, he decided to make it “cross continents”.

Speaking of his career in general, he said that in entertaining an audience one of the best feelings is when they can sing along to your songs.

“It’s a nice feeling especially when you are singing songs that they know and love.”

The multiple award winning singer, whose fourth studio album, produced the single ‘Pray for Me’, still continues to bask in the accolades received from the critically acclaimed song

HEAVENS ARE TALKING

do not be scared of life,
because her words are issues of today.
do not repeat that statement borne out of the earth,
because heavens are talking,
they talking about YOU,
the YOU in YOU.
remember that life is a compendium,
fills with difficulties, challenges and problems
but the solution lies within you.

do not forget life is an icon,
you don't know what it would coin in the next life
life made me remember the word coined by Aremu Adams "Troublem"
you struggle to make your troubles and problems free,
from the chains of Roman gladiators

life is good, life is bad
the heavens are talking, so lie!
life is real, life is fake,
the heavens are singing,
so join them in swinging.

Ivory Coast Votes On New Constitution As Opposition Boycotts

Voters in Ivory Coast cast their ballots in a referendum on Sunday to decide whether to approve a new constitution that President Alassane Ouattara argues will guarantee peace in the wake of years of political turmoil.

Under Ouattara, Ivory Coast has made an impressive recovery since a 2011 civil war capped a decade-long crisis. The International Monetary Fund projects it will be Africa’s fastest growing economy this year.

Despite five years of peace, however, Ivorians remain deeply divided along political and ethnic fault lines. And both they and the investors who are now flooding in, crave the stability that will allow the world’s top cocoa grower to cement its status as the continent’s rising star.

“It’s an opportunity but also a duty,” Ouattara said after voting in the commercial capital Abidjan. “Turning the page on the crisis born of the constitution of 2000 is essential for the future of our nation.”

Opposition parties have called for a boycott of the vote, arguing that the new text was designed to further entrench Ouattara’s political coalition. So, while the “yes” vote is heavily favored, voter participation will be key to determining whether the text has the widespread backing.

By midday, turnout in Abidjan was visibly lower than during last year’s presidential election when 54.6 percent of eligible voters cast ballots.

Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko said incidents of suspected opposition supporters using violence to impede the vote had been recorded in around 100 polling stations in Abidjan and western Ivory Coast. But he said they would not affect the results.

The current constitution, drafted under military rule after a 1999 coup, was at the heart of Ivory Coast’s prolonged unrest.

In its most controversial clause, it says presidential candidates’ parents must both be natural-born Ivorians – a deliberate swipe at northerners, many of whom, like Ouattara, have family ties that straddle the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali.

The new constitution scraps that rule, which was used to disqualify Ouattara from a poll in 2000, and now only one parent must be Ivorian. It also creates a post of vice president and a senate. The president says all these new measures will guarantee more political stability.

However, the new text also allows future changes to the constitution to go ahead without a referendum and with just a two thirds majority in parliament – a body now heavily dominated by Ouattara’s allies – a fact that has raised concern among some rights groups.

Some civil society groups and diplomats, meanwhile, have criticized the process of drafting the text and submitting it to a plebiscite as rushed and lacking transparency. Voters have had just two and a half weeks to review the 184-article charted

BENUE GOVT. FLAGS OFF INTERNATIONAL CARGO AIRPORT

The Benue State government and its joint venture partners under the Public Private Partnership, has flagged off the 38 Billion Naira Benue international cargo airport on a 6,000-hectre land along the Makurdi-Lafia road.
Governor Samuel Ortom while speaking on the economic viability of the project conceived by former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah, said, the 38 billion Naira investment by the Nigerian/Chinese consortium on the airport project and other service, would change the economy significantly.

On its part, the consortium financing the project, which is now under the supervision of the Ministry of Aviation, is seeking security for men and infrastructure, as the governor perform the ground-breaking ceremony.

This 6,000 hectres of land along Makurdi-Lafia road, will host the Benue international cargo airport that will operate from the existing Makurdi Airport.

However, the project was stalled in 2014 when the management of the Nigerian Air Force Tactical Air Command refused to share the airport facilities with the proposed cargo airport project expansion.

The project, which is on a ‘build, operate and transfer agreement’ for a period of 25 years, is being flag off to accommodate cargos from Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states.

While explaining the delay in the take-off of the project, Governor Ortom gave credit to his former colleague and Aviation Minister, Oduah, outlining the benefits of the project.

Already, the contractors handling the Benue International Cargo Airport project have mobilised to the 6,000 hectres site, with a promise to deliver the project for commissioning in five years.

Buhari Celebrates Africa’s First Female Newscaster, Anike Agbaje-Williams At 80

President Muhammadu Buhari is celebrating legendary newscaster, presenter and first African female to appear on television, Mrs Anike Agbaje-Williams, on her 80th birthday.
